Hello Beloved,
The Bible tells us in James 4:3 “You ask and do not receive, because you ask amiss, that you may spend it on your pleasures.” Doesn’t it hurt to see so many prayer requests addressed to God, go unanswered ? It is as if God were deaf to your prayers. How then should one pray efficiently to be heard and answered ? In His love, the Lord shows you today a place where He hears, answers your prayers and gives you an appointment: the secret place. He says in His word “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.” (Matthew 6:6)
What does it mean ? Should you go to an actual secret place to speak to God ? No ! The secret place is not a physical place where one must go and pray since in verses 3 and 4 of Matthew 6, He recommends that your charitable deeds be done in secret. Charitable deeds are usually done outside the house, in a public place. However, the Lord only accepts a charitable deed done in the secret place !
If so, what then is the secret place ? The secret place is simply that specific spiritual place where you meet God in prayer. Above all, it is a state of mind, an internal posture that you take when you enter the presence of God in prayer. The secret place is the heart, the inner thoughts: those that only God sees. When you enter the secret place, you are aware of each word you say, words that must match what is in your heart. Even when you sing onto God, do not utter the song without understanding or being aware of what you are doing, just for the sake of singing. You however, weigh the importance of each word you pronounce. Isn’t the father seeking for true worshipers who worship Him in spirit and truth (John 4:23)? He is seeking after those who worship Him in the secret place !
Entering the presence of God can be compared to the multiple rooms of a house. If you stay in the outer court or in the garden, you will pray according to your flesh so as to satisfy your passions. If you stay in the living room, you will pray according to your soul, meaning your emotions. However, if you enter the bedroom, you will pray according to the spirit, the Spirit of God. If you want to speak to your Father, the Bible precisely recommends that you enter your ”bedroom” and close the door behind you. The bedroom is the most intimate room of a house. The prayer in the secret place is that time of intimacy and interactions with the Lord. Thus, in that place, you give the Lord all your attention, away from “external noises”.
When you pray, it is important to quickly “go through the court and the living room” to enter the “bedroom”, the secret place. If at the time of prayer you are distracted by the cares of everyday life, by a thousand and one emotional thoughts, you will stay at the level of the flesh and the soul. The flesh will want to impose itself on you by for instance making you slumber as you awake in the middle of the night to seek the face of God or by distracting you with your phone. Make all the necessary arrangements to “shut the door” in the secret place !
You must certainly wonder how to enter the secret place when you are in a cab, in the metro, on the street or at work or even at church in the middle of the congregation ? The principle is the same: regardless of the place, enter yourself, in your ”spiritual room”, shut the external noises out of the door of your heart and speak to God. Even for 1 minute, 5 minutes or an hour, each time you want to pray, train yourself in that regard. Do not multiply vain words but ponder over what you say, praying from the bottom of your heart.
It is in that secret place that you find the Lord, as indicated in Matthew 6:6. That is where God is, that is where God sees you and that is still where He hears your prayers and answers them. Learn to pray in the secret place. You will see the fruit of your prayers because God is faithful to His Word: He will give you what you ask Him in the secret place!
May God bless you Beloved
